We love a bit of Wire Works whisky and given that it’s a tricky customer, we were intrigued to see a virgin oak finish release. But White Peak distillery has done a good job creating a very fine example of how to do it right here, taking a vatting of lightly peated single malt whisky initially matured in first-fill bourbon barrels and STR casks before it was finished for several months at a lower ABV in virgin American oak barrels with a range of toast and char levels.

Wire Works Virgin Oak Finish | 700ML Tasting Notes

Nose: Brown sugar, red apples, cinder toffee, and a little cinnamon as well as some leather.

Palate: Vanilla fudge, banana foam sweeties, dried fruit, and some chocolate emerge first followed by hints of marmalade, dates, lime zest, and a nutty element.

Finish: Sweet and slightly drying.

Distillery Information

English whisky, rum, and gin makers White Peak is a Derbyshire-based distillery that was founded in 2016 by husband-and-wife team Max and Claire Vaughan. Its located at the former Johnson & Nephew Wire Works amongst the woodlands on the banks of the River Derwent and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. White Peak is the creator of the Wire Works Whisky, the first batch of which was distilled in the spring of 2018. Its signature flavour profile is the result of a process that occurs entirely on-site, from the mashing of both unpeated and peated malt (about 6ppm) to the slow four-day fermentation featuring live yeast from a local Derbyshire brewery, and the impact of its unique Wire Works home has on maturation.
