A splendid aged Mexican Charanda this traditional spirit is distilled from pressed sugarcane juice in a similar form to the likes of Agricole rum and Cachaa. This particular expression has also been treated with an infusion of Cordyceps Sinensis mushrooms, a funghi that is traditionally used by the local Purpecha people of northern Michoacan and is believed to have medicinal qualities. An intriguing spirit for intrepid explorers, and fab for unusual cocktail creations too.
CASA TARASCO, URUAPAN CHARANDA, a family tradition since 1907. The Pacheco family has been producing Charanda in the city of Uruapan in the state of Michoacn, Mexico for more than 113 years. The Uruapan brand takes its name from the hometown of the Pacheco family, which has a long history in the region. However, the familys involvement with distillation goes back even further. In 1908, Don Cleofas Murgia decided to switch from mezcal production to distilling sugar cane, as mezcal was not particularly popular and sugar cane distillates offered more profitable, visible activities. Miriam Pacheco now runs the family company, continuing the tradition of Charanda production. The Pachecos desire to protect and preserve the local tradition of sugar cane distillation was highlighted in 2003, when the family secured the creation of a D.O. (an appellation of origin) protecting all Charanda producers. The Pachecos have their own production facility for sugarcane, cultivated at 1,270m above sea level. The climate here is tropical, and the area around the sugar cane fields contains mango trees and berries. There are also more than five different (wild and cultivated) banana varieties to be found near the sugar cane fields. The tropical climate ensures hot days and cool nights. All of these factors contribute to Charandas complexity, ensuring a sophisticated, aromatic, deeply flavourful and unique sugar cane spirit.
