Reviews:

• Huon Hooke: It has a light to medium straw-yellow colour and a complex nutty bouquet, with lots of Champagne aldehydes plus dried flower and dried fruit aromas including dried apple, while the palate is tremendously attacking with bright acidity and penetrating citrus and almond-nougat flavours.

• Tyson Stelzer: brioche and vanilla custard character, while contributing wonderfully creamy texture that juxtaposes the chalk minerality of the Cte des Blancs and the vivacious charge of malic acidity. Dosage settles the balance impeccably and sets off a finish of grand line and length.

Producer Information

Lanson is a historic Champagne house in Reims, well-known for the production of its flagship Black Label cuve. It was established by Francis Delamotte in 1760 to focus on exporting champagne to foreign markets. The Black Label Brut is often a strong performer in blind tastings, often attributed to the combination of extra sweetness in the dosage combined with crisp acidity levels. This is supplemented by the absence of malolactic fermentation. The gold-label vintage wine attracts acclaim for its longevity and value for money, and is also zesty and crisp in style. Many of Lanson’s wines are Pinot Noir-dominant, with smaller amounts of Chardonnay and sometimes Pinot Meunier. In addition, Lanson also produces a Brut, Blanc de Blancs and a Ros in the Extra Age series, based on a combination of older vintages. The range is topped by a similar trio of Noble Cuve wines, made from selected Grand Cru vineyards. The Clos Lanson is the house’s prestige release, made from oak-aged base wines with grapes from a walled hectare (2.5 acre) plot opposite the Notre Dame de Reims Cathedral and nearby the Lanson cellars. The inaugural vintage was in 2006.
