In a region full of tiny brands, Janneau is about as close as Armagnac gets to a big house, but its still a minnow compared with the famous Cognac houses. It’s unusual in the region because it uses double-distillation for some of its brandies rather than classic single distillation in an alembic. This vintage offering was double-distilled in 1987, spent 30 years in oak before bottling at 43% ABV, and offers incredible value for a spirit of this age and complexity. And it comes in a smart wooden box!
Nose: Aromas of pastry, vanilla, frangipane and prunes intertwine.
Palate: Prunes and dates on the nose with a hint of orange peel. On the palate there’s figs, butterscotch, toffee, dried apricot, and nuts.
Finish: Slight sweetness with notes of spices such as cinnamon and sichuan pepper.
Maison Janneau was founded by Pierre Etienne Janneau in 1851 at Condom in Armagnac, and this is still where Janneau carries out all of its Grand Armagnac production; the ageing is still carried out in the ancient cellars built in 1851. It is one of the main producers that carries out the distillation, ageing and bottling of its production fully in the AOC Armagnac region. In 1972, thanks to some handy information brought in by Cognac Martell (then the owner of the Grand Marque), Janneau reintroduced the original method of distilling Armagnac, the Double Distillation method with pot stills, to the region. This was tradition before 1909, when French President Fallires made the continuous still compulsory in Armagnac. Now, Janneau is one of just 3 Armagnac houses that uses pot stills, and doubled its capacity in 2013 to include the continuous Armagnacaise still.
