Proof: 88 (44%ABV)
Origin: Germany
Distillery: Ferdinand’s Saar
The raw distillate produced from our own grain is distilled several times, with an additional steam infusion of freshly harvested herbs. We add a uniquely fresh floral note to the gin which is rounded off with a precise measure of Schiefer Riesling. The herbs, spices and fruits used in the gin are delicately balanced and are mainly cultivated onsite. Along with the basic ingredient of juniper, other regional ingredients such as rosehip, angelica, hop blossom and rose are equally important constituents.
Nose: Delicate floral nose, with Meyer lemon zest, rose petals and sweet, slightly minty herbs, perhaps evocative of lemon verbena and pineapple sage leaves, freshly rubbed.
Palate: The palate is botanically rich, with a great deal of flavor jumping out. At first, quieter with orange and lemon, citrus; juniper comes through as well, but somewhat duller without the piney sparkle. Its a wet, kind of thick pine, bushy and suggestive of juniper, with other green notes. Rose comes on towards the back of the palate, with florals on the back of the throat and hints of stone fruit.
Finish: The finish is where you start to get some acidic, wine like notes as well as the standard dry out with a touch of angelica, sage, thyme and bitter orange zest.
In the border triangle between Germany, Luxembourg and France, where the Saar meets the Moselle, lies one of the most fascinating wine-growing regions in Germany. The story of Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Gin, refined with our world-famous Saar Riesling, begins here in the Saar region, in which the most renowned Riesling producers in the country are crowded together in a confined space between gently rolling hills.
