A powerful Champagne produced using grapes grown on a pure chalk hillside facing due south in Mareuil-sur-Ay. Clos des Goisses is divided into 14 plots, of which only the four best of 2011 were included in this blend, which is made up of 100% Pinot Noir. Aged for at least eight years, the very low, Extra-Brut dosage (4.25 g/litre) gives full expression to the vinosity and minerality of the vineyard.Bright gold in the glass, delicate and floral on the nose with notes of elderflower, Darjeeling black tea, linden honey and mint which carries through to the palate, concluding on a long and mineral finish.
Philipponnat is a historic French Champagne house owned by the family of the same name. The Philipponnat’s wine history in the region dates back to the 16th Century when they were growers and merchants, supplying wine to the court of Louis XIV. The company’s 18th Century cellars were part of the Chteau de Mareuil.Philipponnat is particularly known for the Clos des Goisses vintage deluxe cuves (brut and ros), produced from and named for a 5.5 hectare (13.6 acre) walled vineyard. Here, an unshaded 45-degree slope facing due south is regarded to provide the region’s warmest terroir allowing the grapes to achieve maximal ripening potential. The house’s single plot cuves are a trio sourced from Premier or Grand Cru plots at Le Lon in Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Clos des Goisse. These vintage blanc de blancs have been aged for at least seven years prior to release. The collection also includes the Royale Rserve non-vintage line and a broad selection of styles of vintage wines.
