      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: Clear and graphite on the nose that tips you towards Pauillac in style, not intense but bridled with fine tension. There is a pleasing brightness on the palate, something uncommon with 1978s that can be a bit staid, fresh acidity with tertiary bay leaf notes, leading to a short and structured finish. Well-preserved bottles such as this will continue to give pleasure.
      • John Gilman: The 1978 vintage is almost never mentioned when one speaks of the top vintages of Montrose from the decade of the 1970s, but I have been consistently impressed by this lovely wine. The deep, elegant and point nose offers up a classic mlange of cassis, gravel, cigar ash, a touch of brick dust, fresh herb tones, hints of cinnamon and a fine framing of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and complex, with a beautifully reserved profile that speaks profoundly of old school claret sensibilities. The wine shows off good mid-palate depth, bright acids, melting tannins and lovely length and grip on the focused and classy finish. A sleeper vintage of Montrose that is at its apogee, but shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

      Producer Information

Chteau Montrose is a well-regarded and critically much-lauded wine estate based in the Saint-Estphe appellation of Bordeaux’s northern Mdoc region. The estate was ranked as a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, and is regarded as one of the very best properties at that level. The epitome of the Saint-Estphe appellation, Montrose’s top wine is known for its structure (even austerity) in youth, but beguiling many as it ages. The grand vin, composed largely of Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot, is typically deeply colored, powerful and firm when young, but has superb aging potential. The second wine is La Dame de Montrose; the third is Saint-Estphe de Chteau Montrose. The 95-hectare (235-acre) vineyard exists, unusually for modern Bordeaux, as one single entity. It is sited on an exposed site of deep, coarse gravels with sand and a little clay, overlooking the Gironde. The immediate proximity of the water has a moderating effect on both frost and summer heat, and the pebbles in the soil retain daytime warmth into the evening, aiding ripening. The chteau is situated around three kilometers (1.8 miles) northeast of Chteau Cos d’Estournel (another so-called “super-second” i.e. a highly regarded second growth estate) on the border with the Pauillac appellation.
