      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: Consistently one of the great vintages of Beaucastel, the last few bottles in my cellar sport the old Beaucastel label with the words Domaine de Beaucastel, rather than Chateau de Beaucastel. The color is an impressive, opaque garnet, with some amber at the edge. The nose offers up classic Beaucastel aromatics of soy sauce, sweet, chocolaty black fruit intermixed with truffles, tar, animal fur, and new saddle leather. Full-bodied yet structured and extremely well delineated, this is a gorgeously rich, vibrant, healthy Beaucastel that should continue to drink well for another decade. Readers should recognize that this tasting note came from bottles stored in my cellar, which were purchased in the mid-seventies and kept at temperatures in the upper 50s.
      • Jancis Robinson: Mid crimson. This ancient wine seemed to be in the prime of life. Sweet, jewel bright. Very evolved, complex with untamed sort of flavours. Rich and satisfying yet with admirable freshness.

      Producer Information

Chteau de Beaucastel is a wine producer based in Courthzon, in the northern Chteauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhne. It makes some of the most famous wines in the whole of the Rhne Valley, from a classic southern Rhne blend that includes Grenache, Mourvdre and Syrah, as well as the lesser-known Counoise and Cinsaut varieties. The estate reportedly dates back to 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel bought a barn and a plot of vineyards in the region and inscribed his family’s crest onto the walls. The land passed through the family until 1909, when it came under control of scientist Pierre Perrin. Today, Perrin’s grandsons Jean-Pierre and Franois run the estate. The chteau is located in the northeast corner of the appellation, just southeast of the city of Orange. There are around 100 hectares (250 acres) planted to vine, three-quarters of which is used to make the Chteauneuf-du-Pape AOC wines.
