Reviews:
Col Solare is a joint venture between Washington’s Chateau Ste. Michelle and Italy’s Marchesi Antinori, producing a signature Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend from Columbia Valley. The wine was first released in 1995 and aims to reflect the producers’ mutual winemaking philosophies and unique backgrounds in the industry. As of 2007, Col Solare’s winery and estate vineyards are located in the Red Mountain AVA. The 12-hectare (30-acre) estate vineyard, composed of sand and clay soils, is farmed in a similar fashion to the Antinori family vineyards in Tuscany and Umbria. The vineyard has five clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as individual blocks of Carmenre, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Syrah. As well as the estate site, fruit for the eponymous wine and its attendant labels is sourcd from around the Columbia Valley. The varieties and proportions used are vintage dependent, but the wine is usually around 85 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with other Bordeaux varieties and Syrah blended in small proportions.
