Weingut Emrich-Schnleber is a wine producer situated in Monzingen, in the western reaches of the Nahe, in central western Germany. The estate’s 19 hectares (47 acres) of cultivated vineyards are planted mainly to Riesling (85 percent), with smaller quantities of Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder and Mller-Thurgau. The Schnleber family’s viticultural history can be traced back to the middle of the 18th Century and their ancestors, the Emrich family. The estate was initially used for various other agricultural pursuits before 1965, when Wilhelm Schnleber and his son Werner converted the entire estate to viticulture. They expanded the vineyards to a total area of approximately 10 hectares (25 acres). The estate’s Monzingen vineyards are situated on slopes comprised of stony soils. From 1997, Emrich-Schnleber has focused on producing a series of single-vineyard Riesling wines predominantly from its 12-hectare (30-acre) Monzinger Frhlingspltzchen plot and its five-hectare (12-acre) Monzinger Halenberg vineyard. The Frhlingspltzchen vineyard sits atop a mixture of red slate and gravel soils on south-facing slopes. The grapes grown here form the basis of the estate’s high-quality Auslese Goldkapsel and one of its Grosses Gewchs-classified Riesling wines. The south-facing Halenberg vineyard occupies stony blue slate and quartzite soils, and makes Riesling wines that span the sweet spectrum, from Kabinett, Sptlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese to Eiswein. This range of white wines is supplemented by several Sptburgunder-based red wines, bringing the winery’s total production to 130,000 bottles per year.
