Thomas Dakin is a gin brand that claims a heritage going back to the 18th Century. It is named for one of the pioneers of the English gin industry. A version of the recipe for the gin is said to have been developed by the eponymous Dakin. He began distilling gin in the town of Warrington, near Manchester in northern England, in 1761. His descendants became associated with the Greenall family, which absorbed Dakin’s recipe and went on to become a major player in the gin sector. The current incarnation is unusual in that it features “red cole”, an old name for horseradish, in the blend, giving the spirit a distinct savory kick. The spirit is made in a small-scale pot still and a dedicated micro-distillery is planned for Manchester, a city linked to Dakin’s original distilling site by the Bridgewater Canal.
